A rare opportunity to own a one-off, period-correct Triumph Desert Sled, inspired by the legendary machines raced by Bud Ekins in the American desert scene. This 1962 Triumph Thunderbird 650 Pre-Unit has just been completed by our photographer Isaac to a very high standard and captures the raw, purposeful look and feel of a true competition desert sled.
The build has been carefully put together using only high-quality, period-correct components, resulting in a bike that looks as mean as it sounds. Finished in an all-black theme, it has a tough, no-nonsense stance and delivers an authentic soundtrack through its twin high-level exhausts. This is not a show pony—it’s a proper desert sled built to be ridden and enjoyed.

Note from our photographer Isaac: This bike has been an absolute dream to build and ride! It’s a proper usable classic and being a thunderbird its quite an unstressed engine, so perfect for reliable motoring. I built this in summer 2025 and only just got it to a state where I am happy for someone to win it! During that time it has been on many adventures including a 6-7 hour trip down to Cornwall travelling down the Atlantic highway. In all honesty I am sad to see her go!
This 1962 Triumph Thunderbird Desert Sled is a beautifully executed, one-off build by our photographer Isaac that perfectly captures the spirit of early desert racing. With its aggressive stance, authentic parts selection, and unmistakable pre-unit Triumph character, it’s a standout machine that will turn heads wherever it goes. A rare chance to own a genuine, period-inspired British desert sled—ready to ride, show, and enjoy.
